Downtown Pizza and Owner Featured in New Haven Register
New Haven, CT (PRWEB) July 2, 2008 -- Abdul Mahmoud, owner of Downtown Pizza in New Haven, was recently featured in the New Haven Register because he is a minority business owner implementing a new business plan and surviving the tough economy. The daily newspaper provides local information on news, sports, business, opinions, entertainment and lifestyle.
The article, titled "Finding their Niche," explained how rising costs in the restaurant business have forced him to change his business model to remain profitable. Abdul Mahmoud is a native from Sudan and owns Downtown Pizza in the Dixwell Plaza. With rising costs for utilities, gas, food and other necessary supplies, minority business owners have to readjust their businesses.
Mahmoud told the newspaper writer how he's had to implement new plans at Downtown Pizza. "He puts in more hours and takes on delivery routes because he cannot afford to hire more workers or drivers," wrote New Haven Register writer Angela Carter. "And before he drops off any pizzas, grinders or calzones, it takes $25 a day in gas just to get to and from the business."
Mahmoud is also forced to conserve energy by turning down beverage coolers at night and shopping around for ingredients. "Last March, I paid $9 for a 50 pound bag of flour. Now, it's $26," he said in the article. Mahmoud will not increase prices for fear of competition taking his customers and will expand their delivery area in hopes of increasing sales. Because minorities in smaller communities have a noticeably smaller customer base, they will definitely see a difference in business during an economic slump.
About Downtown Pizza: Downtown Pizza, owned by Abdul Mahmoud, is located in the Dixwell Plaza in New Haven, CT. He offers pizza, sandwiches and calzones for delivery and takeout. He is a native from Sudan and continues to strive as a minority business owner through the difficult economy.
